Natural Habitat

Found in moist soil, decaying leaf litter, organic mulch, and occasionally on snow during winter thaws.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae primarily feed on decaying organic matter, roots of grasses, and other small plants.

Behavior Patterns

Often called 'leatherjackets' due to their tough skin, they move slowly through soil. Some species emerge on the surface during warm spells in winter, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as 'snow worms'.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans; however, they can be considered pests in lawns or agriculture if they damage root systems. They benefit the ecosystem by assisting in the decomposition of organic matter and serving as a food source for birds and mammals.
