Human dwellings, bedding, carpets, upholstery, and animal resting areas; adults live on hosts while immature stages develop in surrounding debris.

Adults consume blood, primarily from mammals and sometimes birds. Larvae feed on organic debris and dried blood in the environment.

Wingless, laterally flattened adults jump powerfully and move rapidly through hair or fabric. Eggs drop from the host, and development proceeds through larval and pupal stages.

Bites cause itchy, inflamed papules and may trigger allergic reactions; fleas can transmit pathogens in some regions. They provide limited food for predators but have no meaningful household benefit.
