Natural Habitat

Moist, decaying organic matter, typically found in drains, sewers, septic tanks, and other areas with stagnant water and sludge buildup.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on fungi, bacteria, algae, and decaying organic matter found in the sludge and biofilm of their aquatic or semi-aquatic habitats.

Behavior Patterns

The larvae of drain flies are aquatic or semi-aquatic and are often found wriggling in the slimy buildup inside drains. They have a distinct segmented body. The adult flies are small, fuzzy, and moth-like, often seen emerging from drains.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include being a nuisance pest indoors. While generally not known to transmit diseases, large infestations can be unhygienic. They also indicate a buildup of organic material in pipes which can lead to clogs if not addressed. They provide some benefit in breaking down organic matter.
