Natural Habitat

Found worldwide, typically indoors in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, attics, and drawers where animal-fiber materials are stored.

Diet & Feeding

Adults do not eat. Larvae feed on keratin-containing materials such as wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and leather.

Behavior Patterns

They are photophobic (avoid light) and prefer dark corners. Unlike many moths, they are poor fliers and tend to run or hop when disturbed. The life cycle from egg to adult takes between 1 month to a year depending on conditions.

Risks & Benefits

Significant domestic and commercial pest. They can cause extensive damage to clothing, carpets, and upholstery. They pose no direct health risk to humans but can be difficult to eradicate once established.
