Natural Habitat

Nymphs live in freshwater rivers, lakes, and streams; adults are found near water bodies, often resting on vertical surfaces.

Diet & Feeding

Nymphs typically feed on algae or detritus; adults have non-functional mouthparts and do not eat.

Behavior Patterns

Mayflies are the only insects to molt after reaching the winged stage. This image shows the subimago exuviae (shed skin) left behind after the final molt into a sexually mature adult. Adults live only a few hours to a few days.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. They are vital ecosystem indicators of water quality and serve as a primary food source for fish and birds.
