Natural Habitat

Found primarily on female boxelder trees, as well as maple and ash trees; often seek shelter in houses during winter.

Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous; feeds on the sap of seeds, leaves, and soft twigs primarily from boxelder trees.

Behavior Patterns

Nymphs are bright red and aggregate in large, sun-exposed groups. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis and seek warmth in vertical structures in autumn.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans and plants. They are considered a nuisance pest when they invade homes; they do not sting or transmit disease, but may stain surfaces if crushed.
