Click Beetle

Natural Habitat

Found in soil, decaying wood, under rocks, or leaf litter; commonly attracted to lights in residential areas.

Diet & Feeding

Adults primarily feed on plant nectar, pollen, or flowers. Larvae (known as wireworms) feed on decaying vegetable matter or roots and seeds of living plants.

Behavior Patterns

Characterized by a unique clicking mechanism used to right themselves or escape predators. When flipped on their back, they snap a prosternal spine into a mesosternal socket, launching themselves into the air.

Risks & Benefits

Adults are harmless to humans. However, the larval stage (wireworms) can be significant agricultural pests by damaging the root systems of various crops like potatoes and corn.
