Carpet Beetle

Scientific Name: Anthrenus (most likely Anthrenus verbasci)

Order & Family: Coleoptera, Dermestidae

Size: 2-4 mm (0.08-0.16 inches)

Carpet Beetle

Natural Habitat

Indoors, especially in undisturbed areas rich in animal-based products (carpets, woolens, furs, stored foods, insect collections, pet food). Outdoors, in nests of birds or insects.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on natural fibers (wool, silk, fur, feathers), dried animal products, dead insects, pet food, and some stored dry goods. Adults feed on pollen and nectar outdoors.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are the damaging stage, often found in dark, undisturbed areas. Adults are attracted to light and may be seen near windows. They undergo complete metamorphosis.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Can cause significant damage to household items like carpets, clothing, and upholstered furniture made from natural fibers. Can also infest dried food products. Benefits: As scavengers, they play a role in breaking down organic matter in nature, but this is outweighed by their pest status indoors.
