Natural Habitat

Human dwellings, especially bedding, carpets, upholstered furniture, and clothing, thriving in warm, humid environments.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds primarily on dead skin cells shed by humans and animals (dander) and also on other organic detritus.

Behavior Patterns

Dust mites are microscopic arachnids that are not parasitic on humans but consume shed skin cells. They are almost universally found in homes and are not visible to the naked eye. They reproduce quickly under optimal conditions. They do not bite or sting.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risk includes causing allergic reactions (asthma, eczema, rhinitis) in sensitive individuals due to their fecal matter and body fragments. There are no known direct benefits to humans, but they play a role in decomposition within indoor ecosystems.
