Elm Leaf Beetle

Natural Habitat

Found primarily on or near Elm trees; often enters buildings and homes during late summer or fall to seek shelter for overwintering.

Diet & Feeding

Both larvae and adults feed exclusively on the leaves of elm trees (Ulmus species), skeletonizing the foliage.

Behavior Patterns

They undergo a complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge in spring to lay eggs on leaves; in autumn, they migrate to protected areas like attics or wall voids. They do not breed or feed while indoors during winter.

Risks & Benefits

They are a nuisance pest in homes but do not bite or damage household structures. In the ecosystem, they are a significant agricultural pest that can defoliate and weaken elm trees, making them susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease.
