Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera (Beetles), Family: Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)
Size: Adults: 1.7 to 3.5 mm (approx. 1/16 to 1/8 inch) in length.

Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors in homes, museums, and warehouses where natural fibers are stored. Outdoors, they are found on flowers (especially in spring and summer) and in bird nests.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar. The larvae (often called 'woolly bears') are the destructive stage, feeding on natural fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, dead insects, pet dander, and dried plant products.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and often fly toward windows. Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed places like closets, attics, and underneath furniture, where they can feed on organic material unnoticed. They undergo complete metamorphosis.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: The larvae are significant household pests that can cause extensive damage to carpets, clothing, upholstery, taxidermy, and museum specimens. Their bristly hairs can cause allergic skin reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers, breaking down animal carcasses and debris.
