Natural Habitat

Woodlands, forest edges, gardens, parks, and citrus-growing areas across much of North America.

Diet & Feeding

Adults drink nectar from flowers; caterpillars feed mainly on leaves of citrus and other plants in the rue family (Rutaceae).

Behavior Patterns

Strong, gliding fliers that patrol sunny habitats and visit flowers. Females lay eggs singly on host plants; caterpillars resemble bird droppings when young and develop into large green larvae before pupating.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to people and an important pollinator. Caterpillars can occasionally defoliate ornamental citrus, but usually cause limited plant damage.
