Natural Habitat

Exclusively lives on humans (the host) and in clothing or bedding seams not frequently washed. Unlike head lice, body lice attach their eggs (nits) to clothing fibers.

Diet & Feeding

Hematophagous (blood-sucking); they feed on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are ectoparasites that move to body hair to feed but retreat to the seams of clothing to hide and lay eggs. They spread through close personal contact or sharing contaminated clothing and bedding.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Causes intense itching (pruritus) and skin discoloration ('vagabond's disease'). They are significant vectors for diseases such as typhus, trench fever, and relapsing fever. Benefit: None.
