Human Eyelash Mite
Demodex folliculorum
- Order & Family
- Order: Trombidiformes; Family: Demodicidae
- Size
- 0.3 mm to 0.4 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found on the human face, specifically in or near hair follicles and sebaceous (oil) glands, particularly on the eyelashes, eyebrows, and nose.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on skin cells and sebum (natural oils) produced by the glands in hair follicles.
Behavior Patterns
They are microscopic, eight-legged arachnids that are photophobic, meaning they come out onto the surface of the skin primarily at night to move between follicles and mate. Their entire life cycle is approximately 14 to 16 days.
Risks & Benefits
Generally considered harmless commensals present on most adults. However, an overpopulation (demodicosis) can lead to skin irritation, itching, and eye conditions like blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) or rosacea. If irritation or crusting occurs on the eyelids, it is recommended to see a dermatologist or ophthalmologist for treatment.
