Feeds mainly on microscopic mold, fungi, algae, pollen, and organic residues rather than human tissue or blood.

Small, pale, soft-bodied insects that crawl slowly and reproduce readily in warm, humid conditions. Populations usually decline when humidity and mold are reduced.

Harmless to people and pets and do not bite or transmit disease. Large numbers indicate excess moisture and may contaminate or damage paper, though they contribute modestly to decomposition.
