Adults feed mainly on pollen and nectar or may not feed; larvae consume keratin-based materials such as wool, fur, feathers, and dead insects.

Adults are oval, dark beetles and often gather near windows or lights. Larvae hide in dark, undisturbed areas, shed bristly skins, and can persist for months or years.

Larvae can damage clothing, carpets, upholstery, and taxidermy materials; their hairs may irritate sensitive skin. They also help decompose animal remains and other organic debris.
