Natural Habitat

Moist, shaded soil, leaf litter, gardens, greenhouses, and beneath logs or stones; often introduced in temperate regions.

Diet & Feeding

Predatory, feeding mainly on earthworms, slugs, snails, and other soft-bodied invertebrates. It captures prey with mucus and an extendable pharynx, sometimes using toxins.

Behavior Patterns

Mostly nocturnal and highly moisture-dependent, becoming active after rain. It glides on mucus, can regenerate from body fragments, and lays eggs or produces clonal fragments depending on species.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to people, but may reduce earthworm populations and disrupt soil ecosystems. It has little recognized ecological benefit outside its native range.
