Drain fly larva
Scientific Name: Psychodidae (family level)
Order & Family: Order: Diptera, Family: Psychodidae
Size: 3 to 10 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Typically found in moist environments containing decomposing organic matter, such as drains, sewage pipes, septic tanks, and wet compost.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on the gelatinous film of bacteria, fungi, and decomposing organic material that builds up inside drain pipes and plumbing.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are aquatic or semi-aquatic and breathe through a small siphon at their posterior end. They typically pupate near the surface of the organic film before emerging as adult fuzzy moth-like flies.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and do not bite. While they are considered a nuisance pest in homes, they benefit the ecosystem by breaking down organic sludge in drains. Large infestations can occasionally mechanical transfer bacteria from sewers to surfaces.
