Field Cricket

Natural Habitat

Found in fields, lawns, gardens, and often enter homes, especially in basements or ground floors, seeking shelter or moisture. They prefer dark, damp environments.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous; they feed on a variety of plant matter, decaying organic material, seeds, seedlings, and sometimes other insects.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal; known for their chirping sounds, produced by males rubbing their wings together to attract mates. They are solitary for most of their lives, but can be found in groups in favorable conditions. They are also known to jump when startled.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include being a nuisance pest indoors due to their chirping and feeding on fabrics, paper, or house plants. They do not pose a direct health risk to humans. Benefits include serving as a food source for other animals (birds, small mammals, reptiles) and helping with decomposition of organic matter in the ecosystem.
