Natural Habitat
Dark, undisturbed areas within human dwellings such as closets, chests, and attics where animal-based fibers are stored.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae eat natural fibers of animal origin including wool, silk, fur, feathers, and leather. Adults do not feed.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae spin silken tunnels or mats while feeding. They prefer darkness and avoid light. The life cycle varies from a few months to years depending on temperature and food availability.
Risks & Benefits
Significant household pest that causes physical damage to clothing, upholstery, and carpets. They offer no direct benefit to the human environment and can be difficult to eradicate once established.
