Size: Late-instar larvae can reach approximately 40 mm to 45 mm in length.

Common Mormon Caterpillar

Natural Habitat

Gardens, orchards, and forests; primarily found on host plants in the family Rutaceae (citrus family).

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed exclusively on the foliage of citrus plants (lemon, lime, orange) and other Rutaceous plants like Curry leaf.

Behavior Patterns

Early instars mimic bird droppings to avoid predators, while later instars (green) use camouflage. If threatened, they evert a forked, foul-smelling organ called an osmeterium from behind their head.

Risks & Benefits

They can be minor pests in citrus cultivation due to leaf consumption. However, they are essential parts of the ecosystem and mature into beautiful, ecologically beneficial pollinating butterflies.
