Natural Habitat

Vegetation, gardens, woodland edges, and occasionally buildings, especially across much of eastern and central North America.

Diet & Feeding

Predatory; it pierces caterpillars, beetles, flies, and other insects with a stout beak, then sucks their liquefied contents.

Behavior Patterns

Usually solitary and slow-moving, hunting by ambush or stalking. Immature stages molt several times before becoming adults; adults may fly but often remain on vegetation.

Risks & Benefits

Beneficial biological-control predator that reduces pest insects. It can deliver a painful defensive bite if handled, but is not considered medically dangerous.
