Natural Habitat

Worldwide distribution, commonly found in pantries, kitchens, pharmacies, and dried organic storage areas.

Diet & Feeding

Polyphagous; they consume a vast array of dried plant products including spices, bread, flour, cereal, nuts, seeds, tea, and even pharmaceutical drugs.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are active flyers and attracted to light. Females lay eggs on food sources; the larvae tunnel through the food as they grow, and the lifecycle takes about 2-7 months depending on temperature.

Risks & Benefits

Significant pest of stored products. They can ruin food supplies and damage books or leather. They do not bite or sting humans and carry no known human diseases, but their presence indicates food contamination.
