Natural Habitat

Fireflies are commonly found in meadows, fields, forests, and near bodies of water, particularly in humid areas.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae are predatory, feeding on snails, slugs, earthworms, and other insects. Adult diet varies by species; some feed on nectar or pollen, while others do not feed at all.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are typically nocturnal and use bioluminescence for mating communication. Larvae are also bioluminescent. They undergo complete metamorphosis.

Risks & Benefits

Fireflies are generally considered beneficial insects as their predatory larvae help control populations of some garden pests like slugs and snails. There are no significant risks to humans.
