Natural Habitat

Found in moist soil, decaying leaf litter, grassy areas, and under moss or wetlands.

Diet & Feeding

Primarily decomposes organic matter (detritus), but may also feed on the roots and stems of grasses and crops.

Behavior Patterns

They are nocturnal or subsurface feeders. They undergo a complete metamorphosis with four larval stages before pupating and emerging as adult crane flies.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits the ecosystem by helping decompose organic matter; however, large populations can be minor pests to lawns and agricultural crops by damaging root systems. They are harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting.
