Drain Fly Larva

Natural Habitat

Found in moist, organic-rich environments such as drains, sewage pipes, septic tanks, and wet compost.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on sludge, slime, and gelatinous films of algae, bacteria, and fungi that accumulate in drains.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are aquatic or semi-aquatic. They breathe through a small tube at their rear end and can survive in low-oxygen environments by staying at the surface of the slime layer.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans. While they do not bite or spread disease like mosquitoes, large numbers can indicate a hygiene issue or a plumbing clog. They benefit the ecosystem by breaking down organic matter.
