Case-bearing Clothes Moth Larva

Natural Habitat

Indoors, especially in dark, undisturbed areas where animal fibers are stored, such as closets, attics, and storage chests. Can also be found in bird nests or within fur/wool products.

Diet & Feeding

Keratin-containing materials, including wool, fur, feathers, silk, felt, upholstered furniture, and animal bristles. They will also feed on lint, dust, and synthetic fibers if blended with natural fibers or soiled with food.

Behavior Patterns

The larva constructs a silken case, often incorporating bits of the material it is eating, which it carries everywhere. It feeds within this case, moving only its head and thoracic legs out to graze. The case is enlarged as the larva grows. The adult moths are poor fliers and tend to run rather than fly.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Significant pest of textiles and stored animal products, causing damage to clothing, carpets, tapestries, and taxidermy. Benefits: None significant to humans; in nature, they contribute to the decomposition of animal remains.
