Earwig (likely European earwig)
Forficula auricularia
- Order & Family
- Dermaptera; Forficulidae
- Size
- Adults are typically 12–16 mm long, excluding the cerci (forceps).
Natural Habitat
Moist, sheltered places such as leaf litter, soil crevices, compost, gardens, and beneath containers or debris. Commonly enters homes while seeking darkness and moisture.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous, feeding on decaying plant matter, algae, fungi, small insects, insect eggs, and soft plant tissues.
Behavior Patterns
Mostly nocturnal and attracted to damp, dark hiding places. Females guard and clean their eggs and young; adults use paired rear pincers for defense and mating, not capture.
Risks & Benefits
Harmless to people and not venomous; the pincers rarely cause more than a mild pinch. Earwigs recycle organic matter and eat some pests, though large populations can damage seedlings, flowers, and fruit.
