Adults feed mainly on pollen and nectar. Larvae consume keratin-rich materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects.

Adults are small, oval, and often mottled; larvae are hairy and avoid light. Females lay eggs in secluded indoor sites, and larvae may damage fabrics over several months or years.

Larvae can damage carpets, clothing, upholstery, and museum specimens, and their hairs may irritate sensitive skin or airways. They also help decompose animal-derived organic matter outdoors.
