Scientific Name: Apantesis phalerata

Order & Family: Order: Lepidoptera, Family: Erebidae

Size: 30 to 42 mm wingspan

Harnessed Tiger Moth

Natural Habitat

Found in meadows, open woodlands, gardens, and grassy areas across North America, especially the eastern United States.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae (caterpillars) feed on various low-growing herbaceous plants including clovers, dandelions, and plantains; adults mostly do not feed or take in nectar.

Behavior Patterns

Primarily nocturnal and attracted to lights. They exhibit a distinct 'warning' coloration on their hindwings (often pink or orange) to startle predators. They undergo a complete metamorphosis with typically two generations per year.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans; they benefit the ecosystem by serving as a food source for bats and birds, and the caterpillars help cycle nutrients through the consumption of common weeds.
