Silverfish
Lepisma saccharina
- Order & Family
- Zygentoma, Lepismatidae
- Size
- Typically 0.5 to 1 inch (12-25 mm) long, excluding the antennae and tail-like appendages.
Natural Habitat
Damp, dark, and secluded areas, preferring temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, attics, and storage areas. They seek out places with high humidity.
Diet & Feeding
Polyphagous, feeding on carbohydrates, starches, and sugars. This includes glue, paper (books, wallpaper, cardboard), textiles (cotton, silk, linen), dead insects, and protein matter. They can also feed on human dandruff and other household debris.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and extremely agile, silverfish move quickly with a distinctive 'fish-like' wriggling motion. They are wingless and reproduce slowly, but can live for several years. They are known to remain hidden for long periods and can survive for months without food if water is available.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include property damage due to their feeding habits on paper, books, photographs, and textiles. They do not bite humans, spread diseases, or pose direct health risks. There are no significant known benefits of silverfish to humans or the ecosystem, other than being a food source for some other insects.
