Cellar Spider

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in dark, damp spaces like cellars, basements, attics, sheds, and corners of rooms. They prefer areas with stable temperatures and high humidity.

Diet & Feeding

Mainly feeds on other insects and spiders. They are known to hunt and eat other spiders, including venomous ones like black widows, by vibrating their webs to lure them out.

Behavior Patterns

They build irregular, tangled webs that are not sticky. When disturbed, they often vibrate rapidly in their web, becoming a blur. This behavior is thought to confuse predators. Females carry their eggs in a small silk package.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits include natural pest control, as they prey on various household insects and even more dangerous spiders. They pose no significant risk to humans; their fangs are too small to penetrate human skin effectively, and their venom is not considered medically significant.
