Springtail

Damp soil, leaf litter, compost, mulch, and humid indoor areas such as bathrooms or plant pots. They often occur on wet surfaces after rain or cleaning.

Feed mainly on fungi, algae, decaying plant material, bacteria, and organic debris. They do not bite or suck blood.

Wingless and usually pale, gray, or dark; many species possess a forked springing organ (furcula) for rapid jumps. Populations increase in moisture and decline as surfaces dry.

Harmless to people, pets, clothing, and buildings, though large indoor numbers indicate excess moisture. They aid decomposition and nutrient cycling; only rarely do some species damage tender seedlings.
