Diet & Feeding

Feeds on whole grains such as wheat, oats, barley, rice, corn, and rye. Larvae develop specifically inside whole kernels.

Behavior Patterns

Flightless beetle that relies on human transport of grain to spread. Females bore a hole into a grain kernel, lay an egg, and seal it with a gelatinous secretion.

Risks & Benefits

Major pest of stored food products that can cause significant economic loss; however, they pose no direct health risk to humans as they do not bite or carry diseases.
