Masked Hunter (Nymph)
Reduvius personatus
- Order & Family
- Hemiptera / Reduviidae (Assassin Bugs)
- Size
- 15-22 mm (adults); nymphs are smaller and vary in size.
Natural Habitat
Found indoors in dusty corners, basements, attics, and underneath furniture; also found outdoors in woodpiles.
Diet & Feeding
Predatory; feeds on other household arthropods including bed bugs, silverfish, woodlice, and flies.
Behavior Patterns
The nymphs secrete a sticky substance that covers their bodies, allowing dust, lint, sand, and other debris to adhere to them. This creates a 'dust bunny' camouflage helping them ambush prey and avoid detection.
Risks & Benefits
Beneficial as a predator of household pests (especially bed bugs); however, they can inflict a painful defensive bite if handled or crushed. They do not transmit disease.
