Natural Habitat

Human hair follicles and sebaceous (oil) glands, particularly on the face, forehead, nose, and eyelids.

Diet & Feeding

Skin cells, sebum (skin oil), and hormones found within the hair follicles.

Behavior Patterns

They are nocturnal, emerging from follicles at night to move across the skin surface to find mates and lay eggs. They lack an anus and accumulate waste in their bodies until they die.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless commensals that may help remove dead skin cells. However, overpopulation is associated with skin conditions like rosacea, blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), and demodicosis.
