Natural Habitat
Found indoors worldwide, primarily in stored food areas, pantries, warehouses, and locations with dried plant materials or tobacco.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on a wide variety of dried organic materials including tobacco, spices (paprika, cayenne), grains, cereal, pet food, dried flowers, and book bindings.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are strong fliers and are active in low light; when disturbed, they often pull in their legs and head to remain motionless; they have a characteristic 'humpbacked' appearance where the head is tucked under the pronotum.
Risks & Benefits
Considered a stored product pest; they contaminate food and can cause damage to books, furniture stuffing, and museum specimens, but they do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases to humans.
