Indoors in carpets, upholstery, closets, baseboards, and other undisturbed areas; adults commonly occur on flowers outdoors.

Larvae eat keratin-rich and other animal-derived materials, including wool, fur, feathers, silk, dead insects, and lint. Adults primarily feed on pollen and nectar.

Larvae are covered in bristles and often hide in dark, sheltered locations, sometimes remaining unnoticed for months or years. They molt repeatedly and may leave shed skins behind; adults emerge seasonally and reproduce indoors or outdoors.

Larvae can damage natural-fiber clothing, carpets, taxidermy, and stored specimens, and their hairs may irritate sensitive skin or airways. They recycle animal debris outdoors, while adults contribute to pollination.
