Natural Habitat

Native to the western United States and Mexico, especially dry scrub, grasslands, gardens, and woodland edges. It lives mainly underground in loose soil, beneath rocks, and under logs.

Diet & Feeding

Mostly feeds on roots, tubers, decaying plant material, and occasionally small insects. It generally forages at night.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal, solitary, and often burrows or hides during the day. It may drum or rub its legs against the ground, and its powerful jaws can deliver a painful defensive pinch.

Risks & Benefits

Not venomous and generally harmless to people, though handling can cause a painful bite. It aerates soil and contributes to decomposition; substantial garden damage is uncommon.
