Junk bug (Green Lacewing Larva)

Scientific Name: Chrysoperla spp. / Ceraeochrysa spp.

Order & Family: Neuroptera: Chrysopidae

Size: 3mm to 10mm (0.1 to 0.4 inches)

Junk bug (Green Lacewing Larva)

Natural Habitat

Gardens, fields, agricultural areas, and occasionally accidentally found indoors on plants or clothing.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous; feeds primarily on aphids, scale insects, spider mites, and insect eggs. Known as 'aphid lions' for their voracity.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae of certain species (debris-carriers) attach the carcasses of their prey and other bits of plant/dust matter to their backs using hooked bristles. This provides camouflage and protection from predators like ants.

Risks & Benefits

Highly beneficial as natural pest control in gardens. While they are not medically significant, they can occasionally give a tiny, non-venomous but surprising 'nip' to human skin if handled.
