Case-bearing clothes moth (adult)
Tinea pellionella
- Order & Family
- Lepidoptera; Tineidae
- Size
- Adults are about 6–8 mm long, with a wingspan of roughly 9–16 mm.
Natural Habitat
Dark, undisturbed indoor areas such as closets, carpets, upholstery, and stored textiles; larvae may live inside portable silk cases.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae consume keratin-containing materials, including wool, fur, feathers, hair, and natural-fiber textiles. Adults generally do not feed.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are weak fliers and often hide or run when disturbed. Larvae construct and carry spindle-shaped cases, pupating within or near their feeding material.
Risks & Benefits
Larvae can damage clothing, carpets, and other animal-derived fabrics, but they do not bite or transmit disease. They contribute modestly to decomposition of keratin-rich debris.
