Carpet beetle larva (likely)
Anthrenus spp. (likely)
- Order & Family
- Coleoptera; Dermestidae
- Size
- Larvae are typically 2–5 mm long; adults are about 2–4 mm.
Natural Habitat
Homes, especially carpets, upholstered furniture, closets, and areas containing lint or natural fibers; also found outdoors on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae eat wool, fur, feathers, hair, dead insects, and other keratin-rich materials. Adults mainly feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are slow-moving, hairy, and often hide in dark, undisturbed places; their shed skins may be more noticeable than the insects. Adults are attracted to light and may enter through windows.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or transmit disease, but larval hairs can irritate sensitive skin and infestations can damage fabrics and stored animal-based materials. Outdoors, adults pollinate plants and larvae help recycle organic debris.
