Sidewalk Mite (or Concrete Mite)
Scientific Name: Balaustium sp.
Order & Family: Order: Trombidiformes, Family: Erythraeidae
Size: Very small, typically 1mm - 2mm in length.

Natural Habitat
Often found in large numbers on concrete surfaces like sidewalks, patios, and rock walls, particularly in sunny areas during spring and early summer. They can also be found in lawns and meadows.
Diet & Feeding
They are predaceous and feed on other small arthropods, such as other mites, small insects, and insect eggs. They are also known to consume pollen.
Behavior Patterns
Active on warm, sunny days, scurrying quickly across masonry and concrete surfaces. They use their forelegs like antennae to sense their surroundings. They are usually most abundant in the spring.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and pets; they do not bite or sting people, nor do they spread disease. They are beneficial as they eat pest insects and eggs. However, they can invade homes in large numbers and become a nuisance, sometimes leaving red stains if crushed.
