Springtail (likely)

Moist soil, leaf litter, decaying wood, mulch, and damp indoor areas such as bathrooms or basements. The pictured individual is on a wooden surface.

Feeds mainly on fungi, algae, bacteria, decaying organic matter, and microscopic plant material. It does not bite or suck blood.

Often occurs in large numbers in humid conditions and may jump using a forked abdominal springing organ called a furcula. Populations decline when surfaces dry.

Harmless to people, pets, clothing, and structural wood; indoor sightings indicate moisture rather than infestation damage. They help decompose organic matter and recycle nutrients.
