Natural Habitat

Humid indoor locations, especially combs, brushes, stored paper, cardboard, fabrics, and areas with mold or organic residue.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds mainly on microscopic mold, fungi, algae, starches, and other organic debris rather than blood or living tissue.

Behavior Patterns

Often occurs in clusters in damp, undisturbed places and is most active in warm, humid conditions. Reproduction can be rapid, sometimes without males, but these insects do not establish parasitic infestations on people.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans and pets and do not bite or transmit disease. Large numbers indicate excess moisture and may contribute to contamination of stored materials; improving ventilation and drying the item usually controls them.
