Scales (Soft Scales or Armored Scales)
Coccoidea (Superfamily)
- Order & Family
- Hemiptera (Order), Coccidae or Diaspididae (Family)
- Size
- 1 to 5 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Typically found attached to the stems, leaves, or fruit of host plants; they are common in gardens, greenhouses, and on houseplants.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on plant sap by piercing the plant tissue with their mouthparts and sucking out the fluids.
Behavior Patterns
Once they find a feeding spot, many species become sessile (stationary), secreting a protective waxy covering. They often go unnoticed until a large infestation occurs, causing plant yellowing or stunted growth.
Risks & Benefits
They are major agricultural and horticultural pests that can weaken or kill plants. Some species secrete 'honeydew' which promotes the growth of black sooty mold. Benefit: Some species have historically been used to produce dyes (e.g., Cochineal).
