Natural Habitat

Open sunny areas such as gardens, fields, and parks, primarily across the southern United States into South America.

Diet & Feeding

The chrysalis phase does not eat. As caterpillars, they feed exclusively on Passionflower leaves (Passiflora). Adults drink nectar from various flowers.

Behavior Patterns

The chrysalis mimics a dried leaf to avoid predation. This is the non-motile pupal stage where the caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis to become a butterfly, typically lasting 10-20 days.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits the ecosystem as a primary pollinator in its adult butterfly form. It is generally harmless to humans, though caterpillars can defoliate passionflower vines.
