Large Milkweed Bug

Scientific Name: Oncopeltus fasciatus

Order & Family: Hemiptera: Lygaeidae

Size: 9 to 18 mm (approx. 0.35 to 0.7 inches) in length.

Large Milkweed Bug

Natural Habitat

Fields, meadows, and gardens where milkweed (Asclepias) plants are present, primarily throughout North America.

Diet & Feeding

Specializes in eating the seeds, leaves, and stems of milkweed plants; they use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the plant's juices.

Behavior Patterns

They exhibit gregarious behavior, often found in large groups on milkweed pods. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult). In colder climates, they migrate south for the winter.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans and don't bite. They provide a benefit by sequestering toxic chemicals from milkweed, which makes them distasteful to predators, serving as a classic example of aposematism (warning coloration) in nature.
