Fungus gnat (likely)

Moist soil, decaying organic matter, greenhouses, and indoor potted plants.

Larvae feed mainly on fungi, algae, and decaying plant material; some may nibble roots. Adults consume little, primarily liquids or nothing.

Weak-flying adults often hover near soil and windows. Larvae develop in damp potting mix, with multiple generations per year indoors.

Generally harmless to people and pets. Larvae can damage seedlings and roots during infestations, while contributing to decomposition.
