Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera (Beetles), Family: Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)
Size: Typically 1.7 to 3.5 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Often found indoors in homes, museums, and warehouses, particularly in dark, undisturbed places like attics, closets, carpet edges, and under furniture. In nature, adults are found on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae maximize damage by feeding on natural fibers, including wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, dried plant material, and dead insects. Adult beetles feed primarily on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and often found near windowsills. The larvae prefer dark, secluded areas and are responsible for the damage to household items. They have a life cycle that includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: The larvae are a significant household pest that can damage carpets, clothing, upholstery, and preserved biological specimens. The tiny hairs on larvae can cause allergic reactions or skin irritation (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of dead animal matter.
